Introduction

During the last few years, the popularity of the Internet has increased
extraordinarily: It has expanded considerably and the possibilities
it offers were subject to a remarkable media excitement.

Despite its popularity many users of the Internet do not know how the
Internet is built up or which are the principles that keep the net
working. Since the Internet is an enormous source of information,
answers to these questions may of course be provided somewhere on
the net. Unfortunately, experience shows that most informations about
the Internet found on the net require some previous knowledge.
Therefor they are not suitable as an introduction to the technical
aspects of the Internet.

The purpose of this page is to give a short (but not at all exhaustive)
description of the technical realization of the Internet and one of its
most popular services, the World Wide Web . As we will explain
technical terms common in the context of the Internet, anybody, not
only experts, can read and understand the following.
In detail we are going to deal with

The history of the Internet
IP, TCP, Ports and DNS
Clients and Servers on the WWW
HTTP
